JCAA Youth Education Award

Tim Brennan was selected by the JCAA Youth Education Committee to receive the JCAA Youth Education Award. The following nomination was submitted by the Shore Surf Club, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ:

The Shore Surf Club would like to nominate Mr. Tim Brennan for the 2021 JCAA Youth Education Award. Mr. Brennan is a health and physical education teacher and certified NJ HOFNOD instructor at Brick Memorial High School (BMHS), Brick, NJ.

Tim’s recent accomplishments include the following: Tim designed a NJ HOFNOD proposal that was introduced to the Brick Board of Education in 2015. He collaborated with other educators to ensure students would be engaged in learning about aquatic education and utilizing fishing as a healthy outdoor alternative to drugs and alcohol. The program was introduced into the BMHS curriculum and is a favorite class among students.

Tim solved student transportation issues by rescheduling classes to fit bus scheduling challenges. Students participate in the fishing program from 10:00 am till 12 noon five days a week. Each student receives their Boating and Safety Certificates through the USCG Auxiliary. They also receive First Aid/CPR/AED certification through the Brick Township EMS.

During the school year, Tim’s class worked to raise funds for veterans with PTSD to go fishing and invited veterans into the classroom for an inter-generational learn session with his fishing class. Students in Tim’s NJ HOFNOD health and physical education class have opportunities to gain experience from invited speakers and conduct aquatic research activities such as applying for a New Jersey saltwater species collection permit to measure the growth rate of Tog. During COVID restrictions, Tim accessed the high school to maintain the integrity of saltwater tank and to keep the research tank operational for students returning to the classroom.

With the guidance of NJ Fish and Wildlife Service, NJ DEP HOFNOD, and the Jersey Coast Anglers Association, Youth Education Committee, he has designed learning activities for students that create job opportunities for students over the summer months. We are proud to nominate Mr. Tim Brennan for the JCAA Youth Education Award.

Come join us on Sunday, November 14, 2021, to celebrate at the JCAA Sportsperson of the Year Dinner to recognize a host of individuals that go above and beyond to make recreational fishing better for future generations.

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Inc. will host a fly fishing workshops throughout the winter months to teach veterans about fly fishing. Please join Morgan Woods and his guest speakers to learn more about an innovative program that offers all veterans with disabilities an opportunity to gain experience about fly fishing. Visit their Facebook page. Topics for PHWFF workshops include Recommended fly-casting gear basics – How to tie knots for fly fishing – Know how to select proper fly lines – Saltwater and freshwater fly cast demonstration and how to apply for NJ Veteran freshwater fishing license benefits.

Liz Jackson, NJ HOFNOD Coordinator, for New Jersey's "Hooked on Fishing-Not on Drugs" Program informed us there will be another NJ HOFNOD training opportunity before the end of the year. NJ HOFNOD provides a fantastic opportunity to get kids involved in positive recreational activities. The goal of the NJ HOFNOD program is to introduce youth to the fun and excitement of fishing, and to engage them in meaningful life skills, so that they also can imagine unlimited possibilities for themselves. Take a few moments to read about all the excellent work NJ HOFNOD Leaders are doing throughout New Jersey. Please contact Liz if you would like to become a volunteer.

Support Local Tackle Dealers

We recently visited local tackle dealers to setup our Play HOOK-e display and inform veterans and their families about our “Play HOOK-e from PTSD” programs. All our Play HOOK-e veterans are encouraged to shop at local tackle dealers. Most tackle dealers offer discounts to veterans. Here is link to tackle dealer list.

Veterans that stopped by our table received a welcome gift bag supplied by Vietnam Veterans of America Shore Area Chapter 12 and Jersey Coast Anglers Association. We informed veterans about our JCAA newspaper and Play HOOK-e by-monthly newsletter. Many thanks to participating tackle dealers for supporting our magnet campaign and allowing us space to speak to veterans at their business. If your business would like us to setup a Play HOOK-e Go Fishing display, please contact Greg at 732-785-9278.

During November, we are offering veterans with PTSD an opportunity to relax for a few hours by the water and visit natural calming areas. If you would like to experience saltwater and freshwater fishing, we have a short one-to-one fishing program to get you outdoors to fish and boat. Connect with nature at Lake Julianna, LZ-64, Island Beach State Park, and other open spaces. To schedule a day and time, please email Greg @
